Sandoval County officials will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5, to launch a long-awaited project to rebuild a heavily damaged 5.5-mile section of Torreon Road, a route that links the Navajo communities of Torreon, Ojo Encino and Counselor with U.S. 550.
The ceremony will be held at the intersection of San Luis and Torreon Roads which can be reached by traveling northwest on U.S. 550 from Bernalillo and turning onto San Luis Road at mile marker 41 then west onto Torreon Road.
The project is being funded by a $5 million federal grant that was awarded to the county last year. Residents of the communities use the road to reach jobs, medical care and other services in the metro area. The road is also part of many school bus routes.
In recent years it has deteriorated so much that many commuters no longer find it save to travel, according to a Sandoval County release.
The county commission recently approved a contract with Franklin’s Earthmoving to do the work.
