SANTA FE (AP) — A new law in New Mexico will offer disabled military members and veterans from other states a lower cost license to hunt an exotic big game animal.
Gov. Susana Martinez signed a measure into law on Tuesday allowing non-resident disabled active duty military or veterans who are part of a qualified rehabilitation program to buy an oryx hunting license at the price for a New Mexico resident.
An out-of-state oryx hunter pays about $1,600, which is 10 times more than a New Mexico resident’s license.
Oryx are a long-horned antelope native to Africa. The animals were released in southern New Mexico by the state’s game agency in the late 1960s.
New Mexico offers similar license discounts for disabled military and veterans for hunting deer, antelope, elk, javelina and turkey.
