The Stars come out at night

The New Mexico Stars play host to the Laredo Rattlesnakes at Santa Ana Star Center Saturday, as a pair of .500 teams square off in a 7:05 p.m. kickoff.

It’s the home opener for the Stars (1-1), idle last weekend after beating the San Angelo Bandits, 60-42, in their opener before a 62-34 loss at Amarillo.

The Rattlesnakes (1-1) lost their opener at Abilene, 62-61, then made their home opener a success, beating San Angelo, 65-41.

In their March 23 loss in Amarillo, the Stars’ quarterback, K.J. Black, suffered tears to his ACL and MCL and will miss the remainder of the season. With Black out, the Stars have been searching for a new quarterback.

“There is no panic with this team” said Stars General Manager Abe Hernandez, in light of Black’s injury. “We will go back home, regroup, and get ready for Laredo … the Star Center is going to be rocking.”

On Tuesday, the Stars acquired Amarillo back-up QB Brendan Crawford to replace Black. Crawford had thrown one pass thus far — and it was intercepted.

The Rattlesnakes are a pass-heavy offense (254 yards passing, 7 yards rushing) that runs the ball only when they get inside the 5 (7 rushing attempts for 7 total yards).

Kids 12 and under will get a free ticket if accompanied by a parent (one child per adult).
