Editorial: More APS seniors show the selfless side of teens

The Albuquerque Public Schools Foundation has a message for those folks who say there’s never good news about teenagers. Make that 28 of them.

The foundation has announced the sixth class of Selfless Seniors, teens who not only are in good standing with their schools but also with their communities. Because they give back. A lot.

These impressive students include Volcano Vista’s Nikkie Duran, who is on the Heroin Awareness Committee and a spokesperson for SafeTeen New Mexico; her brother Michael, 19, died from his heroin addiction. And La Cueva’s Brad Wible, who has raised money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and CureSearch; his sister successfully fought leukemia.

The group, which you can see and read about on ABQJournal.com, has seniors from every high school, and their varied interests include athletics, music and student government. Yet all share a commitment to helping others, and the fact they live that lesson every day speaks well of them, their families, their schools and their communities.

This editorial first appeared in the Albuquerque Journal. It was written by members of the editorial board and is unsigned as it represents the opinion of the newspaper rather than the writers.
