Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Volcano Vista and West Mesa were at the Storm Relays last Saturday at Cleveland’s track.
Except for the 100-meter dash — which was open — the other events were scored, and won, based on a cumulative score/mark of several athletes from a given team. There were several events not normally contested at the high school level — the 4×800-meter relay, the 3×1,600 and the shuttle hurdle relay.
Boys
Cleveland won these events at the Storm Relays:
4×400 (Brandon Lawrence, Camden Davis, Tyler Chavez, Nathan Muñoz); shuttle hurdle relay (Parker Jones, Keaton Frieberg, Tyler Caldwell, Chris Wall); 100 (Jones); 4×800 (Jared Mayoral, Matt Smith, Quadry Escalada, Dustin Enyeart); 4×200 (Lawrence, Davis, Chavez, Muñoz); 300 hurdles (Frieberg, Caldwell, Caleb Kofchur); 3×1,600 (Luis Martinez, Enyeart, Aaron Flores); 4×100 (Muñoz, Jones, Lawrence, Chavez); long jump (Davis, Nainoa Biggs, Caldwell); triple jump (Biggs, Caldwell, Kyle Petrey); high jump (Jones, Nate Barnes, Jacob Earnest); and discus (Levi Van Bastian, Jacob Anderson, Mike Roseborough).
Volcano Vista won the javelin competition with Mike Budick, Marc Martinez and Chris Acosta.
Cleveland scored 149 points, La Cueva 77 and Rio Rancho 61.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Cleveland was at a smaller meet at Los Alamos, and won the majority of the events. The highlight was a lightning-quick 41.85 seconds run in the 4×100 relay team of Muñoz, Jones, Lawrence and Romell Jordan. Jordan, the anchor, was in his first meet of the season after nursing a sore hamstring.
Storm coach Kenny Henry said he believed the 41.85 is the second-fastest 4×1 run in state history.
Other event winners Friday: Jones in the 200 and 110-meter high hurdles; Muñoz in the 100; Mayoral in the 1,600; Martinez in the 800 and 3,200; Lawrence in the 400; Frieberg in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles; Davis in the long jump; Casey Shearer in the pole vault; Jacob Anderson in the discus; the 4×2 relay team of Matt Santacroce, Chavez, John Bastian and Steven Steele; and the 4×4 with Chavez, Santacroce, Steele and Frieberg.
THIS WEEKEND: Most of the other Rio West schools are at the UNM Tailwind Invitational/Rio Rancho High School Invitational at UNM Track. It began Friday and concludes today. It is a state qualifying meet with no team scores, Rio Rancho coach Sal Gonzales said.
UP NEXT: The F.M. Wilson Relays (boys only) are next Friday at 2:45 p.m. at Wilson Stadium. Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Cibola, West Mesa, Valley, Volcano Vista, St. Pius and Bosque School are entered.
Girls
Cleveland scored 128 points to win the Storm Relays, with La Cueva (103) and Los Alamos (61) second and third, respectively. Rio Rancho (51) was fourth, with Volcano Vista (45) in fifth place.
Cleveland had eight victories out of the 16 events:
4×400 (Audrey Martinez, Erin DeBee, Larimar Rodriguez, Elicia Gallegos); triple jump (Alina Armstead, Savannah Peyton, Alex Williams); shot put (Alex Winebark, Erin Carrica, Mikayla Brownell); discus (Winebark, Williams, Pearl Isaia); 4×100 and 4×200 (Martinez, Nia Powdrell, Rodriguez, Gallegos); long jump (Rodriguez, Gallegos, Powdrell); 100 (Powdrell).
FRIDAY NIGHT: Cleveland, with 207 points, won a small meet in Los Alamos.
Gallegos captured both the 200 and 400 for the Storm, and Winebark took the shot put and discus. Other winners were: Williams in the javelin; Nicolette Pacheco in the 1,600; Malia Gonzales in the 3,200; Rodriguez in the long jump; Cassy McClintock in the 300-meter hurdles; the medley relay team of Mikaela Smith, Torrey Alexander, Laura Rice and Pacheco; and the 4×400 relay squad of Martinez, McClintock, Cassandra Brownell and DeBee.
THIS WEEKEND: Rio Rancho is hosting its meet at UNM Track, although it is a qualifying meet with individual winners, rather than a scored team competition.
UP NEXT: Milne is the host site next Friday (2:45 p.m.) for the Albuquerque Relays. Rio Rancho, Bosque School, West Mesa, St. Pius, Cibola, Valley and Volcano Vista’s girls are entered. Cleveland is at Moriarty’s invite Friday.
