“Love, Loss and What I Wore” searches women’s closets for their memories and the threads of meaning that tie them all together.
The show explores toe cleavage, weight and status purses as well as a woman who finds herself in a paper dress on the wrong day of the month, according to a news release from Aux Dog Theatre.
“It’s about all the things that happen to women while they are looking for their om. It was originally done (in New York City) with five actress on stools as a readers’ theater,” explains director Joann Danella. “But we have six actresses and we’re acting out each scene and vignette.”

Danella says the play is not for women only, but will bring a laugh for any man whose wife or girlfriend ever said, “Does this make me look fat?”
In one vignette, an identity crisis occurs when the character recalls facing a choice between a demure blue dress or a sexy, little black dress: “I’ve never really known which of those two people I am.”
The play, written by Nora and Delia Ephron, was based on the book by Ilene Beckerman, after the Ephrons interviewed another 100 women.
A rotating cast of well-known actresses, such as Tyne Daly, Rosie O’Donnell, America Ferrera and Kristin Wig, graced the New York production that received several awards including the Drama Desk honor, Unique Theatrical Experience.
The Albuquerque production features some local favorites: Heather Donovan, Catherine Hughes, Celina Igwe, Ninette S. Mordaunt, Kellé Senye and Lori Stewart. The cast features women of all body types, shapes, ages and backgrounds, Danella says.
Danella and Aux Dog’s artistic director V.J. Liberatori say the play is making its Albuquerque premiere.
“I’m just so honored that the Aux Dog is able to do a play by this amazing woman. She’s a great director who really understands that the average woman is a miracle,” Liberatori explains. “This play is that Nora Ephron-style of comedy that crafts a poignant moment, that moment of laughter through tears.”
Nora Ephron, well-known for movies like “When Harry Met Sally,” “Julie and Julia” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” died in June 2012.
