Sports editor signs Diamonds book at Isotopes
Gary Herron, sports editor of the Rio Rancho Observer, will sign copies of his new book “Duke City Diamonds: Baseball in Albuquerque” at 12:30 p.m. today when the gates open at Isotopes Park. The book traces the history of baseball in Albuquerque since 1915. The Isotopes Pro Shop is carrying the book, which was published by LPD Press/Rio Grande Books.
ABOUT BARNS: Local author and illustrator Jerry Davis will speak at 2 p.m. today at a special meeting of the East Mountain Historical Society about his research and work in the writing of the book, “Barns from the Land of Enchantment.” He will have copies of the book and print reproductions of his illustrations from the book. The talk is being hosted in a local barn near Frost Road and North N.M. 14. The talk is open to the public. For information call 281-8791.
AT BOOKWORKS: Rachel Neumann, editor to Thich Nhat Hanh, will be at the bookstore at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 with her memoir “Not Quite Nirvana: A Skeptic’s Journey to Mindfulness.” The bookstore is at 4022 Rio Grande NW.
BOOK TALK, SIGNING: Gene Lessard will discuss and sign his book “Grandfather’s Tale: The Story of Human Evolution and Dispersal” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at the Menaul Book Exchange, 9409 Menaul NE.
AT UNM: The UNM Bookstore will welcome poets Andi Penner and Felecia Calon Garcia at noon Wednesday, April 10. Penner’s first collection of poetry, “When East Was North,” was published in 2012 by Mercury Heartlink. Garcia is the author of a chapbook, “Pos orafel.” Her latest book of poetry, “Say That,” was recently published by UNM Press. She teaches at Central New Mexico Community College.
AT GARCIA STREET BOOKS: Author Tom Folsom will be sharing his new biography of actor Dennis Hopper, entitled “Hopper,” from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, April 13. He will read selections and answer questions. The bookstore is at 376 Garcia St. in Santa Fe.
ABOUT RESTAURANTS: Saru Jayaraman, author of “Behind the Kitchen Door,” will be at First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE, for a discussion and book signing at 1:30 p.m. today. The book is a behind-the-scenes look at how restaurants are run.
SOUTHWEST WRITERS: Instructor Melody Groves will present “How to Write for Magazines and Bag Your First Assignment” from 6-8 p.m. Mondays from April 8-29. She writes for regional and national magazines. The meetings will be at the SouthWest Writers office, 3200 Carlisle NE, Suite 114. The cost is $160 for SWW members and $200 for nonmembers. IN SANTA FE: Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse will present a reading and book signing with Linda Marianiello and Franz Vote with their collaborative translation, “Gertrud Kolmar: A Literary Life,” at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8.
And at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11, the bookstore will host a reception and talk for artist Alex Peña, who regularly participates in European exhibitions, teaches at the Institute for American Indian Art in Santa Fe and shows at the Santa Fe Indian Market.

POETS’ OPEN MIC: Page One Bookstore will host a Poetry Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 with featured poet Katherine DiBella Seluja. Open mic nights are hosted by Kenneth P. Gurney and the diverse local poets of New Mexico. Thirty minutes of open mic will be followed by a reading by the featured poet. Sign-up for the open mic sessions begin at 6:45 p.m.
