Two men face charges in connection with a Nob Hill night club that left one man dead and another injured Sunday morning.
Police say that Matthew Mora, age unavailable, shot Jabar Lewis at Copa Cabana Night Club, 4100 Central Ave. SE, at around 2 a.m. Sunday during a bar fight in the club, according to a criminal complaint. Lewis later died at University of New Mexico Hospital. Angelo Burdex also suffered a gun shot wound during the fight. He was in stable condition Sunday morning, according to an APD spokesman.
Mora faces an open count of murder among other charges, according to the criminal complaint.
Ahmad Williams, 22, faces an aggravated battery charge, among others, after police say he was also involved in the fight and provided Mora with the gun, according to the complaint.
According to the criminal complaint:
Mora told police that he and Williams had a history of fighting with Lewis and Burdex. He said Williams gave him a revolver in the men’s bathroom and told him to hold it because it didn’t fit in his pocket.
Toward the end of the night, Mora said, Burdex hit Williams in the face with a pistol and said “I’m going to kill you!” During the struggle, Mora said he took the pistol out and began shooting at Lewis and Burdex. He told police he had seen both with guns earlier in the evening and both had threatened his life in the past.
He and Williams then ran from the club. A police officer recognized them based on the description given by a club-goer and detained them.
One man died and another was injured in a shooting at a Nob Hill night club early Sunday morning, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.
When Albuquerque police officers arrived at the Copa Cabana Night Club, 4100 Central Ave. SE, just after 2 a.m., a man lay on the floor in blood. He was breathing when taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
His name and age had not been released as of Sunday afternoon.
Another man, who was also at the club, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was in stable condition, according to police.
Club-goers questioned by police as they were leaving said they heard gun shots but did not see anything. Officers detained one person for questioning but an APD spokesman said in a news release that he did not know if that person was involved in the shooting.
Officers were also checking to see if there was surveillance video that could help with the investigation, according to the news release.
