Two drivers hospitalized from 2 wrecks in 1 night

Two serious car wrecks occurred in Rio Rancho in just more than an hour Wednesday evening.

One person in each wreck had life-threatening injuries, but they remained alive Friday morning.

About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, it appears a sport-utility vehicle was turning left into Southern Plaza near 21st treet from the eastbound lanes of Southern Boulevard when a two-door Acura hit it at a high rate of speed, said Rio Rancho Police Sgt. Nicholas Onken. The SUV rolled onto its side.

Onken said the male driver of the Acura was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital. The male driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries.

Then about 5:45 p.m., two pickups were involved in a T-bone crash at Broadmoor Boulevard and Idalia Road.

The female driver of one truck was extricated by rescue personnel and airlifted to UNM Hospital, Onken said. The female driver of the other truck was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Both crashes are still under investigation. No more information was available.
