Shania Berger, 16, of Socorro, had a Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour’s “Shootout at Sandia” tournament last weekend that will be remembered for years to come. Berger had the lowest single-day score of the tournament, a 66 the first day, and had the enjoyment of getting a hole-in-one on the third hole, a 152-yard par-3 from the white tees.
Returning player Dominique Galloway, a freshman at Cleveland High School, persevered on the back nine both days, determined to make up shots from the front. She nearly went bogey-free on holes 10-18 the second day, after having a rough fifth hole.
Galloway was second; Emily Mahar, 13, of Scottsdale, was third.
The RMJGT has seen the scores of 12-year-old Jacquelyn Galloway from Rio Rancho drop significantly from the time she joined the tour in August 2012. Last season, she claimed four out of six first place victories shooting low to mid 80s; last weekend, she opened with two rounds in the 70s (74, 78), adding yet another win to her list.
In the boys’ 13-14 division, Alejandro Armijo from Rio Rancho favored the front nine (shooting 37-38) over the back nine, in which he shot two rounds of 41. He wound up in third place.
The 2013 tournament schedule will resume in two weeks with the Silverado Classic in Scottsdale.
