PORTALES (AP) — A 70-year-old man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for a 2009 shooting death at a lodge in Tucumcari.
The Portales News-Tribune reports that Robert Wynashe was convicted Friday in the death of 45-year-old Howard Russell King.
King was paralyzed and died later at a rehabilitation hospital.
Wynashe was found incompetent to stand trial in 2011, given treatment to make him fit for trial and was transported back to Quay County for trial.
King’s sister, Tina Molina, says her brother was a good person with a kind heart and Wynashe deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The judge asked Wynashe whether he had comments to make before he was sentenced.
Wynashe said nothing he could say would make a difference.
