Tippi Hedren, ‘Marnie’ coming to KiMo

Turner Classic Movies is bringing its “ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD Classic Film Festival” to Albuquerque’s historic KiMo Theatre next week, with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s controversial 1964 thriller “Marnie,” introduced by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and a special guest appearance by “Marnie” star Tippi Hedren, according to a KiMo news release.

The film, on the KiMo’s big screen in Hi-Def with Dolby Sound, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, and tickets are free but are available ONLY online at www.tcm.com/roadtohollywood.

“Marnie” is the story of a troubled young woman who is a compulsive thief and who enters reluctantly into a relationship with her boss, a publisher played by Sean Connery.

The film wasn’t too well received by critics or audiences on its release but has since become considered a classic.

It was Hedren’s second film for Hitchcock, after the former model starred in “The Birds” in 1963. The troubled relationship between the young actress and the legendary director was the basis for last year’s made-for-television movie, “The Girl” on HBO.

Hedren, who is the mother of actress Melanie Griffith and mother-in-law to actor Antonio Banderas, has become well-known for her passionate protection of big cats, and her Shambala Preserve, north of Los Angeles, is home to about 50 abandoned exotic felines — lions, tigers, jaguars, cheetahs, jaguars and more, according to the KiMo release.

Mankiewicz is the weekend daytime host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM), debuting in September 2003 as only the second host in TCM’s history, after Robert Osborne.
