The Alamogordo City Commission late Tuesday approved final publication of an ordinance that will split the city’s public safety department into distinct fire and police departments, the Alamogordo Daily News reported.
The new law goes into effect this month, but the Alamogordo Police Department and Alamogordo Fire Department will not formally come into existence until the new budget year starts on July 1, the Daily News said.
According to a city memorandum obtained by the Daily News on Tuesday, the move will mean an overall reduction in the money the city now spends for police and fire services.
Under the new arrangement, the fire budget will increase by about $183,000 and the police budget will decrease by about $423,000 — resulting in an overall reduction of about $230,000 in the coming fiscal year, the Daily News said.
