Decades pass, but Bataan memories strong

It was 71 years ago, and the survivors are in their 90s now, but the memory of the 1942 surrender of American and Filipino forces in the Philippine Islands to Japanese forces must be etched in their minds. Soldiers were marched for some 65 miles through the jungle, with thousands of Filipinos and hundreds of Americans dying before they reached the prisoner of war camp.

Among those seized were members of the 200th Coast Artillery, New Mexico National Guard, making the event particularly poignant to people here.

Survivors attending Tuesday’s ceremony in Santa Fe’s Bataan Building marking the 71st anniversary of the event were Bill Overmier, Rosenaldo Lovato, Ralph Rodriguez, John Love and Fredric Foz.
