Watering Restrictions Lifted for Now

By John Fleck
Journal Staff Writer
You can water any time you want now in Albuquerque, with the Nov. 1 end of summertime watering restrictions. But you probably don't need to water much at all, according to Katherine Yuhas, head of water conservation programs for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority.
Look at your plants, Yuhas said Monday, and if they look a little bit dry it's a good idea to water them, but they should not need much at all. "If it's really dry," she said, "maybe you need to water them once a month."
Regulations limiting outdoor watering to the cool hours of 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. ended Sunday. But while it's OK to water now, Yuhas pointed out that watering in a way that makes your sidewalk icy is not only dangerous, but also can result in a fine on your water bill.
Yuhas also reminds water utility authority customers that they have until Dec. 31 to take advantage of a $100 rebate when they replace their old 3- to 6-gallon-per-flush toilet with a new low-flow toilet, which typically uses 1.6 gallons. In 2010, the water authority will continue to offer $200 rebates on high-efficiency toilets that use less than 1.6 gallons per flush.
Further information on the rebate program is available by calling 768-3655 or visiting the utility's Web site at www.abcwua.com/conservation.
