UNM Therapy Program Given National Honors

AROUND TOWN: University of New Mexico School of Medicine faculty members from the Occupational Therapy graduate program recently received national awards at the American Occupational Therapy Association annual meeting.
Dr. Janet Poole was selected to join the American Occupational Therapy Foundation's Academy of Research. The academy consists of 41 national leaders who are recognized for their scholarship and research contributions. In her research, Poole has explored hand impairments in people with scleroderma and other rheumatic diseases, and motor recovery in people who have had strokes.
Poole, who currently serves as a tenured associate professor in the department of pediatrics at UNM, joined the UNM Occupational Therapy graduate program in 1993.
Dr. Barbara Hooper was awarded the honor of AOTA Fellow. Those designated as Fellows have significantly contributed to the advancement of occupational therapy education and professional development of members of the AOTA. Hooper was recognized for her leadership in transformative graduate education in occupational therapy. At UNM, she studies and analyzes different instructional techniques used by faculty in graduate and professional education. On a national level, Hooper continues to be involved in faculty and curriculum development initiatives.
Hooper is an assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at UNM and has been with the UNM Occupational Therapy graduate program since 2004.
TEACHER SELECTED: Bill Torres, social studies teacher at St. Pius X High School, is one of 30 high school teachers from throughout the United States who will be in Richmond, Va., this month for an intensive three-day study of Chief Justice John Marshall and his impact on the American judicial system.
Torres, a 1992 graduate of St. Pius, the faculty moderator of the Chi Rho yearbook and assistant athletic director, was chosen from a nationwide nominating process by the John Marshall Foundation. The seminar is funded by the Lipman Foundation.
The seminar is design to educate high school teachers about the impact of the John Marshall court on constitutional law.
ENMU JUNIOR TO INTERN: Eastern New Mexico University junior Erin Griffith will intern in the Washington, D.C., press department of Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., this summer. The Albuquerque native is one of eight New Mexican interns working for the senator from June 28-Aug. 2.
“Since this internship is related to what I want to do as a career, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to see if this type of work and environment is really compatible with my goals,” Griffith said.
She added that by being a double major in communication and political science, she hopes she knows the needs of a press office and has a firm understanding of the political questions.
Griffith said that she looks forward to seeing how Congress truly works and how the representative and constituent relationship unfolds.
“I will also be happy to see real public transportation and the free museums that the area has to offer,” she said.
CLASS REUNION: Albuquerque High School class of 1948 will celebrate its 60th high school reunion Aug. 22-23 at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North, 5151 San Francisco Road NE.
On Aug. 22, activities include registration from noon-5 p.m. and a mixer beginning at 6 p.m. On Aug. 23 registration will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., a no-host bar from 6-11 p.m., dinner from 7-8 p.m., program from 8-9 p.m., concluding with a dance from 9-11 p.m.
