An Albuquerque man illegally parked in a handicapped spot dragged a police officer and struck two cars with his vehicle when he tried to flee from police on Wednesday, according to a criminal complaint.
Jeremy Paulos, 26, is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and aggravated battery on a police officer.
Two Albuquerque police officers patrolling the Smith's supermarket parking lot in the 100 block of Coors NW spotted a Chevy Malibu park in a handicapped spot, according to the complaint. It did not have a handicapped plaque.
Police approached Paulos, who was the driver of the Malibu, and asked if he had a placard, according to the complaint. Paulos then allegedly put the car in reverse at a high speed and slammed into a Ford Taurus behind it.
One of the police officers ordered Paulos to stop and tried to reach inside the Malibu to stop it. Paulos then put the Malibu in drive and quickly accelerated, striking a Cadillac and a barrier, according to the complaint.
The officer was dragged along the driver's side of the Malibu when it accelerated. The officer was almost crushed between the Malibu and Cadillac, according to the complaint.
The officer was not seriously injured.
