County To Offer Meals To Children

By Maggie Ybarra
Journal Staff Writer
Bernalillo County will join the city of Albuquerque today in providing free summer meals to kids.
The Summer Food Service Program for Children provides lunch to children ages 1 to 18 on a first-come, first-served basis. Breakfast is also served at certain sites.
The city's program will end Aug. 6, and the county's will end two weeks before that, said Henry Saavedra, manager of the city program.
He said city officials serve about 11,000 lunches and about 3,000 breakfasts a day at about 140 sites, including community centers and parks.
The demand for the program has been steadily increasing, Saavedra said.
"We're getting a higher volume of calls here so we're sensing the urgency for families that are desperately needing our program because of the possibility that they might have lost a job in the family or their financial situation is hurting," he said.
For more information on city meal sites, call 764-1747 or go to the city's Web site at cabq.gov/communitycenters and click on "summer food program."
For more information on the county sites, call 314-0430.
