Lucky Us: City a Top Place To Live
By Journal Staff Report
Albuquerque's economy, weather, natural beauty and wealth of recreational opportunities make it one of the nation's top livable cities, according to two national magazines.
U.S. News and World Report listed Albuquerque in its top 10 best cities list, without a specific ranking. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine ranked it the second most desirable city, second only to Huntsville, Ala.
Both magazines cited Albuquerque's existing high-tech industries and potential for growth in that area as reasons the city is a good place to live.
At a news conference Tuesday to celebrate the recognition, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez said he was "delighted."
"I think this bodes well for Albuquerque's economy over the next 12 months as entrepreneurs look for places to invest," Chávez said. "They see Albuquerque in these rankings, and that has real meaning."
U.S. News and World Report, which said it looked for affordable cities with strong economies, made much of the fun side of Albuquerque, mentioning the balloon fiesta, the variety of golf courses, hiking opportunities and bike trails as reasons why the city is so attractive.
