Caldera Wants To Extend Leave

By Martin Salazar
Journal Staff Writer
University of New Mexico law professor Louis Caldera plans to seek an extension of his leave without pay to work at the Center for American Progress.
The former UNM president had already been granted unpaid leave through December to work as director of the White House Military Office, a position from which he resigned last month.
After landing a job with the Washington, D.C., think tank, he sent an e-mail to law school colleagues notifying them he would be on leave for the entire 2009-10 academic year.
"I have discussed my plans with our incoming dean, and he is supportive of this plan of work," Caldera wrote. "We will determine what makes sense beyond the '09-10 academic year at a later point in time."
The extension will have to be approved by the law school dean and the provost's office.
Deputy Provost Richard Holder said he does not know whether Caldera formally initiated the process to extend his leave.
Caldera quit as director of the White House Military Office after he authorized a presidential jet to buzz lower Manhattan for a photo that reportedly cost $329,000. The jet terrified New Yorkers who feared they were witnessing a repeat of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
