Wesley Robinson had just gotten out of prison.
His friends threw him a welcome home party, and all was going well.
But several beers and liquor shots later, authorities say a friend was shot in the face, and Robinson was forced to greet Albuquerque police as they began an investigation into what went wrong.
The incident occurred about 4:40 a.m. Wednesday.
According to a search warrant affidavit:
A group of friends gathered at the home of Daniel Caouette on the 500 block of Rosemont Avenue NE. Two children, 3 and 5, were sleeping in a bedroom.
Somewhere amid the drinking and the joking, a drunken Edward C. DeBaca accidentally shot the homeowner in the face.
Albuquerque police arrived to find a startled Robinson, who said he was in the bathroom when his friend was shot. He led police inside.
There, they found DeBaca on the floor applying pressure to Caouette's wound.
DeBaca insisted he be arrested. He was a horrible person for shooting his friend, he told police, adding that he knew better than to handle a gun while drunk.
Police said nobody was arrested, but authorities executed a search warrant and confiscated three firearms. Caouette's condition is unknown.
