Commissioners Pick Berry's Replacement

Jim White, a retired Air Force officer, won appointment Tuesday to the state House of Representatives to replace Richard Berry.
Berry resigned this week after winning election as Albuquerque mayor.
Bernalillo County commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of White's appointment to the Four Hills-area seat in Southeast Albuquerque.
Commissioner Michael Brasher, whose district includes that part of town, nominated White for the job and called him a "man of integrity."
White "knows the area," Brasher said. "He knows the problems. He's volunteered hour after hour for people in the community."
Brasher and other commissioners said they received many résumés from candidates interested in the appointment, right up until the meeting started around 5 p.m. Commissioners said they wanted to move quickly to fill the seat because the Legislature is meeting in a special session Saturday.
Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins voted against the appointment of White. She said her vote wasn't necessarily a sign of opposition to White specifically. She said she just needed more time to review the applicants.
Many candidates came forward only right before the meeting, officials said.
White is a retired Air Force officer, and he used to be a manager at the Albuquerque International Sunport. He's a Republican, like Berry.
