Mayer Sued for $5,600 on Target Credit Card

City Councilor Sally Mayer faces a lawsuit alleging she owes about $5,600 on a Target credit card.
The suit, filed in March by Target National Bank, is pending in state District Court.
Mayer said she's been open with the public about her finances.
"This isn't new," she said. "My finances aren't a secret. When I went to work for Kmart (during the holidays), I told everyone that my investments weren't paying what they had been."
Mayer said she is working with a debt management company to help her resolve the problem. She originally owed less than the $5,600, but Target added late fees and other penalties. It got to the point where she couldn't make the monthly payments Target demanded, she said.
She said she's never been in this kind of situation before.
"I have no intention of filing bankruptcy," Mayer said. "I intend to pay all my debts. ... I will pay this off."
Mayer used to work in real estate and as a hotel manager. She took a temporary job with Kmart in 2007. She said she is now actively looking for a job.
City councilors make about $11,000 a year.
"This is just a very difficult time for anybody to be getting jobs," Mayer said. "This is a tough time for a whole lot of people. I really think we being me and the country will get through this. I've never not been able to get a job. I've never not honored any commitment."
Mayer, a Republican, won election to the council in 2001. She represents a chunk of the Northeast Heights, including the Uptown area.
She is up for re-election this year and has drawn two opponents, Michael Cook and David Green.
Target National Bank's complaint alleges Mayer owes $5,610.88, plus accrued interest. Court records list the suit as pending, but Mayer said court staff told her the case is "stalled" and no court date has been set.
"I'm not the only person in this situation at all," Mayer said. "We'll all come out OK eventually."
