Journal Wire Reports
Man From Iowa Killed In Rollover I-40 Car Crash
SANTA ROSA — An Iowa man has died in a rollover crash on Interstate 40 in eastern New Mexico.
State Police identified him as 19-year-old Tyler Danielson of Carlisle.
Officers say the vehicle in which Danielson was riding drove into the median Saturday, went into a slide and rolled once, throwing out four of the six passengers.
Danielson was pronounced dead at the scene. The other five people were airlifted to an Albuquerque hospital.
77 Cell Phone Tickets Issued in Las Cruces
LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces police issued 77 citations in the first month of the southern New Mexico city's ban on talking on cell phones while driving.
The ordinance, which went into effect Feb. 5, prohibits drivers from using a cell phone without a hands-free device.
The first violation is punishable by a $25 fine, the second by a $50 fine and the third and subsequent offense by a $500 fine or up to 90 days in jail or both.
The ban includes text messages and e-mails while driving.
Residents Upset Over Location of Parole Site
HOBBS — Hobbs residents say it's a bad idea to build a juvenile parole and probation office near an elementary school.
Petitions have been circulating in the southeastern New Mexico city to stop construction of the Children, Youth and Families Department office. All four Lea County legislators sent letters of concern to the state agency.
Stone Elementary principal Dawni Nelson says parents have been calling the school over concerns for their children's safety.
A spokeswoman for the state agency, Romaine Serna, says Children, Youth and Families has entered into a contract with a builder and will honor that obligation.
She says the juvenile probation office will be only one of several offices located in the building.
