Train Station Set To Open

By Lloyd Jojola
Journal Staff Writer
Another Rail Runner Express station is set to open, which could change some train departure or arrival times by several minutes.
The Kewa Pueblo station — at the pueblo that used to be called Santo Domingo — will become the 12th stop on the 100-mile Belen to Santa Fe commuter train line.
Rail Runner trains on March 22 will begin making stops at the new station, which sits between Bernalillo and Santa Fe.
A ceremonial opening station is planned on Tuesday. It's the second station to open on pueblo land, after the one at Isleta Pueblo.
As a result, a new train system schedule will go into effect that same day.
The added stop could mean no change at all or a change of a few minutes in arrival or departure times, depending on the train.
Any changes would be minor, said Augusta Meyers of the Mid-Region Council of Governments.
"The time is basically being made up in the existing schedule by just tightening things up a little bit," Meyers said. "It's pretty negligible."
She said train managers tried to keep arrival times to Santa Fe the same. However, the new train schedule changes will have a trickle-down effect.
Also taking effect March 22, ABQ RIDE is making "minor schedule adjustments" for buses that connect with Rail Runner trains.
The buses affected include: the Route 151 Rio Rancho-Albuquerque/Rail Runner Connection; Route 222 Rio Bravo/Sunport/Kirtland Air Force Base; Route 317 Downtown/Kirtland Air Force Base Limited; and Route 350 Downtown/Airport Express.
Those buses are operated under contract with the Rio Metro Regional Transit District, which oversees and manages the train.
