Boy, 13, Found Shot in Head; One Teen Fled

By Maggie Ybarra
Journal Staff Writer
Police were trying to determine late Friday how a 13-year-old boy was shot in the head with a handgun.
Investigators were also searching for a 17-year-old boy who fled the home moments after a shot was fired. Neighbors said the teenagers were longtime friends.
The victim, whom police did not identify, was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Police said his injuries were life threatening.
According to investigators, police were called to the 5900 block of Arvilla NE about 5:30 p.m. after someone called 911 and reported a shot had been fired. When they arrived, they found the 13-year-old in a bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The older teen, who was in the room when the shooting occurred, was gone, police said.
Police said the shooting occurred inside the home of the 17-year-old's grandparents.
Investigators said they didn't know if the shooting was accidental, self-inflicted or intentional.
Albuquerque police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said the shooting initially looked self-inflicted. Police were not calling the other boy a suspect.
"We don't know if he has anything to do with it, but we want to rule everything out," Hamby said.
The shooting occurred next door to the home of James McGrane. McGrane's son, James Jr., was a Bernalilllo County sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed in March 2006.
McGrane said he has lived next door since 1968.
"He's (the 17-year-old) just probably a normal teenager," said McGrane, who was having dinner when he heard the gunshot.
