The Sandia High principal and an assistant principal were placed on leave Friday pending an investigation into allegations of employee misconduct.
Michael Bachicha, who has been principal of Sandia since 2005, and Assistant Principal Kevin Cummins were both placed on leave, according to an Albuquerque Public Schools news release.
"We are obligated to fully investigate any allegation of employee misconduct. We are looking into these allegations, while protecting the rights of the employees involved. We hope to have the matter resolved soon," APS Superintendent Winston Brooks said in the release, which gave no further details.
He later said in an interview that the situation is not a police matter. Handling the investigation are the Internal Audit and Human Resources offices, as well as an associate superintendent, Brooks said.
Bachicha could not be reached for comment.
A staff meeting has been scheduled at the school Monday morning to discuss the issues, district spokeswoman Johanna King said. She said the meeting is closed, and she would not say what time it will be held.
Bachicha, who has been with the district since 1976, was principal of Taylor Middle School and an assistant principal at Manzano High.
King said APS has not named an acting principal yet.
Cummins came to Sandia in 2007 from Del Norte High, and had previously been an assistant principal at Taylor.
