Inmates Leap From Moving Van

By Journal Staff Report

Two Metropolitan Detention Center inmates tried very unsuccessfully to escape from custody Monday.
Carlos Smith, 24, and Timothy Johnson, 25, kicked open the door of a van that was transporting them from court back to the West Side jail and jumped out.
But Smith was badly injured and couldn't get up, and since he was handcuffed to Johnson, neither one of them could make a run for it, said jail spokeswoman Nataura Powdrell.
There was only one officer driving the van but he had no trouble securing the inmates again, Powdrell said. The van had just exited the freeway at Paseo del Volcan.
As of Monday evening, Smith was being treated at University of New Mexico Hospital while Johnson was back at the jail. Smith is facing domestic violence charges and Johnson is facing a variety of charges including aggravated assault and shooting a gun at someone's house.
Powdrell said the two will now face additional charges for attempting to escape. She said she didn't know the extent of Smith's injuries other than that he lost his front teeth while jumping from the van.
