Voter Rolls Are Up 5% in Bernalillo County

Journal Staff Report
Bernalillo County's voter rolls have climbed about 5 percent since the last presidential election, thanks at least partly to voter-registration drives.
County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver said 375,244 voters are registered in the county. Forty-seven percent are Democrats, and 33 percent are Republicans. The rest either don't have a party affiliation or are registered with minor parties.
The figures could still change as registration forms roll into the County Clerk's Office, Toulouse Oliver said. New voters have until 5 p.m. Oct. 7 to register.
Election workers, she said, are tackling a backlog of more than 10,000 registration forms turned in by independent groups. But the clerk said she is confident the registrations will be processed in time for the election.
"We are making huge headway, and we'll have everything absolutely done by the election," Toulouse Oliver said.
Some cards have been set aside because they are missing Social Security numbers, birth dates or other necessary information. The County Clerk's Office is trying to reach those people.

Key dates
Oct. 7: Deadline to register to vote or update your registration information. Also, absentee voting begins.
        Oct. 18: Early voting begins.
        Oct. 31: Absentee voting ends.
        Nov. 1: Early voting ends.
        Nov. 4: Election Day.
