Mesquite-Area Residents Sue Helena Chemical

Associated Press
MESQUITE — Helena Chemical Corp. found itself sued by Mesquite-area residents Thursday, the day it scheduled an open house to reach out to residents.
One of those suing, Arturo Uribe, says residents tried to work with the company for five years, but found their health, air quality and water quality becoming bad.
News of the lawsuit came as Helena held an open house at its fertilizer warehouse in Mesquite and presented results of independent air and water quality studies at the plant, which stores and blends fertilizers.
Helena scheduled the events to dispel what company officials say are misconceptions about its operations.
The vice president of Helena's southern business unit, Louis Rodrigue, says the facility doesn't manufacture chemicals or fertilizers at the plant.
