Judge's Retirement Leaves Vacancy on Bench

By Journal Staff Report

The Aug. 1 retirement of Chief Judge William F. Lang on the Second Judicial District Court will create a vacancy on the bench to be filled under New Mexico's judicial selection process — recommendations by a committee and appointment by the governor.
Judge Ted Baca is slated to take over as chief judge upon Lang's retirement.
The new dean of the University of New Mexico School of Law, Kevin Washburn, will preside over his first Judicial Nominating Commission session at 9 a.m. Aug. 27 at the Bernalillo County Courthouse, 400 Lomas NW.
By statute, the dean acts as the nonvoting chair of a group of lawyers and lay members, Republicans and Democrats, who interview and evaluate applicants and send up a short list to the governor.
Applications will be taken until 5 p.m. July 31. Application forms are available at the judicial selection Web site, http://lawschool.unm.edu/judsel. They may also be sent electronically or by mail by calling Sandra Bauman at 277-4700.
The commission meeting is open to the public.
Lang's last day is July 31. Post-retirement, Lang plans to do mediation and projects from an office in the Cavan building at 500 Marquette NW, and will join the University of New Mexico Hospital board of trustees.
