Journal Staff Report
Fifty-five state laws that were produced during the 2009 legislative session went into effect Wednesday.
The new laws include tougher punishment for auto theft, making six months of ignition interlock use mandatory for reinstatement of DWI offenders' driver's licenses and replacing the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Of the 288 pieces of legislation signed into law by Gov. Bill Richardson, 179 took effect June 19. The rest either went into effect immediately or will take effect on a future date.
