3-Year-Old Boy Dies of Swine Flu

Journal Staff Report
A 3-year-old Otero County boy with chronic health conditions died of complications from swine flu in mid-January, the New Mexico Department of Health said Wednesday.
Secretary Dr. Alfredo Vigil urged New Mexicans, particularly those with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes, to get vaccinated for swine flu. Children under 10 need two doses of the vaccine.
The Department of Health has distributed 750,000 doses of swine flu vaccine statewide and free vaccination clinics are open to anyone.
The boy's death is the first reported pediatric H1N1 death since November. Swine flu has killed 10 New Mexicans ages 17 and younger. Of those, nine died between August and November.
Swine flu has killed 53 New Mexicans in all.
The Department of Health has reported that swine flu killed New Mexico children last fall at a rate five times that of the nation, possibly because the illness was more pervasive here than in other states.
