Reaction To Richardson's Withdrawal

"He obviously had to make the judgment as to what made the most sense going forward. I certainly respect that. Once this issue is cleared up, I hope at that time he'll take a position in the Obama administration. But I guess that's to be determined."
        Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.
"Gov. Richardson postponed taking a position in the administration to ensure that President Obama and the American people face no delays in getting to work to fix our ailing economy, and the president-elect said he looks forward to Gov. Richardson joining his administration in the days ahead."
        Lt. Gov. Diane Denish
"All of us basically thought it was a done deal. I'd heard something about the investigation, but I thought it'd been going on so long that if there was a problem, it would have been taken care of."
State Senate Minority Leader Stuart Ingle, R-Portales
"Perhaps (it's) too soon to say if he's weakened politically. I have to believe it's not something he's enjoying, though."
State Republican Party Chair Allen Weh
"It is indeed a shock. He would have been a tremendous asset to New Mexico as secretary of commerce. ... It's sometimes best for the whole to not create a frenzy that would in any way taint the transition of President Obama."
        State Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa
"(Richardson has) had a very successful career, with few setbacks. This is a big setback."
Journal pollster and political analyst Brian Sanderoff
"It was a little surprising — I can say that. I don't know if it weakens him politically. He's going to be as assertive as he has in the past."
State Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen
