N.M. Soldier Killed in Iraq

Journal Staff Report
An Alamogordo soldier was killed in Iraq this week, the Department of Defense announced Saturday.
Army Spc. Christopher M. Kurth, 23, died Thursday in Kirkuk of wounds he suffered when his vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade, according to a Department of Defense news release.
Kurth was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas.
Family friend Dane Brown said Kurth was married and had stepchildren. He was born and raised in Alamogordo and graduated from Academy del Sol Alternative High School. Kurth joined the Army right after high school and had recently re-enlisted. Brown said Kurth was on his second tour in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart in April after a shrapnel injury. He could have come home but decided to stay and finish his tour.
Kurth is the 50th service member from or with close ties to New Mexico to die in the Middle East since March 2003.
