Intruders Shoot Homeowner

By Rozanna M. Martinez
Journal Staff Writer
A San Ysidro man was shot multiple times in his home early Friday by two intruders as his wife and children slept in another room.
One of the intruders then woke up the man's wife, demanding money. The victim remains in critical condition.
The San Ysidro Marshal's Office was called to a shooting just before 4 a.m. in the 400 block of N.M. 4. There, officers found a man who had been shot several times in the torso.
He was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Friday, State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said. The Marshal's Office turned the case over to State Police.
Prior to the shooting, two men went to the home and began to bang on the front door. The male homeowner opened the door and was immediately attacked by the two men, Garcia said.
The homeowner was shot multiple times during the attack. It was not immediately known Friday whether he was shot by one of the intruders or both.
One of the intruders continued to attack the man while the other went to a back bedroom, where the homeowner's wife and children were sleeping.
That man asked the wife, "Where's the money," and she pointed to her husband's wallet, Garcia said. The man took the wallet and left.
Witnesses told police they saw the men flee in a white GMC or Chevy pickup. It was last seen headed south on N.M. 4 toward U.S. 550.
State Police were attempting to find out whether the victim was targeted or whether the incident was a random act. This type of incident is unusual to the area, Garcia said.
The attackers were last seen wearing ski masks and dark clothing.
