Senator in D.C. To Talk Health Care

By Sean Olson
Journal Staff Writer
It looks like a New Mexico legislator will get to give her two cents on health care reform.
Sen. Dede Feldman, D-Albuquerque, has been tapped along with state officials from across the nation to spend Wednesday giving advice on what will and won't work in upcoming health care reform bills, Feldman said in an interview Monday.
"They seem very eager to hear our ideas and our best practices ... They'll definitely get an earful from me," Feldman said.
Feldman was to leave for Washington, D.C., this morning and will meet with Sen. Jeff Bingaman and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, among others, on Wednesday, she said.
The longtime North Valley senator has spent at least six years as chairwoman of the state's Health and Human Services Committee. She said she has gotten to know how health care reform bills affect people locally and is excited to share that knowledge with the Obama administration.
Feldman said she looks forward to giving feedback that will keep New Mexicans from any "dire consequences" that could come from a health care bill, including federal health insurance reform that could trump efforts being made within the state.
    New director at GOP
The Republican Party of New Mexico named Sergio Garcia as its new political director Monday.
Garcia will be a new face to help craft political strategy, expand fundraising efforts and help with "the party's Hispanic outreach," according to a GOP news release Monday.
Garcia was working in Nicaragua, assisting with the campaigns of 147 mayoral candidates running against campaigns supported by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, according to the release.
Garcia also worked for both Bush-Cheney campaigns.
