All County Candidates Face Competition

By Dan McKay
Journal Staff Writer
Candidates for Bernalillo County office can expect plenty of competition.
No one will be getting a free shot at the three County Commission seats on the ballot, the Assessor's Office or the Sheriff's Office, according to a list of candidates who filed with the clerk Tuesday.
In fact, seven candidates are running for the Democratic nomination to serve as sheriff, and two more are running in the Republican primary. The incumbent in that race is Manuel Gonzales III, a Democrat appointed to fill the unexpired term of Darren White, who joined the city government last year.
Even the lower-profile assessor's race drew four candidates — two each in the Democratic and Republican primaries. The controversy over "tax lightning" might have triggered extra attention for that office.
The incumbent, Karen Montoya, will face a former assessor, Mark Carrillo, in the Democratic primary. The winner will go on to face one of two Republicans in the general election.
The primary is June 1 and the general election is Nov. 2. Here's a look at the candidates in contested races:
County Commission, District 1 (West Side, North Valley)
Democrats Loretta Naranjo-Lopez, Michelle Lujan Grisham and Dan Serrano.
        Republican Simon Kubiak.
County Commission, District 3 (two-year term, central Albuquerque)
Democrats Wellington Marcelinoant Guzman and Maggie Hart Stebbins.
        Republican Robert Applegate
County Commission, District 5 (East Mountains, southeastern Albuquerque)
        Democrat Janet Saiers
        Republican Wayne Johnson
        County Assessor
Democrats Mark Carrillo and Karen Montoya (incumbent)
Republicans Jeffrey Rich and Christie Humphrey
        County Sheriff
Democrats Pat Davis, Felix I. Nunez, Manuel Gonzales III (incumbent), Marie Sisi Miranda, Geraldine Amato, Joshua Timberman and Joe R. Williams.
Republicans Dan Houston and William Kurth.
        Probate Judge
Democrats Willow Misty Parks and Lawrence Kay
        Republican Bea Sheridan
        Metro Court Judge, Division 14
        Democrat Briana H. Zamora
        Republican Juan A. Pino
2nd Judicial District Judge, Division 11
Democrats Gerard Lavelle and Edward Arnold Padilla
2nd Judicial District Judge, Division 23
Democrats Lori Millet and Shannon Bacon
