Cibola To Issue Permits for Cut-Your-Own Christmas Trees

Journal Staff Report
For people inclined to hike into the mountains and cut their own Christmas trees, the Cibola National Forest will be issuing permits from Monday through Dec. 24.
Each household is limited to one permit at $10, but up to nine additional permits, also at $10 each, can be purchased for others. Trees, which can be up to 10 feet tall, include juniper, piñon, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, Engelmann spruce, blue spruce, sub-alpine fir and Southwestern white pine.
Permits are available over the counter at:
        • Cibola National Forest, supervisor's office, 2113 Osuna NE, Albuquerque; Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. 505-346-3900.
        • Mount Taylor Ranger District, 1800 Lobo Canyon Road, Grants; Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. 505-287-8833.
        • Fort Wingate Office, 1900 E. Santa Fe Ave., Grants; Saturdays only, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 505-488-5441.
        • Magdalena Ranger District, 203 First St., Magdalena; Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-noon and 12:30-5 p.m. 575-854-2281.
Permits will not be issued out of the Sandia or Mountainair Ranger Districts because cutting Christmas trees is not allowed in the Sandia or Manzano mountains.
