SF County Plans To Buy 1,300 Acres in La Cienega
SANTA FE Santa Fe County plans to negotiate with developers to buy 1,300 acres of the old La Bajada Ranch in La Cienega that had been slated for nearly 175 homes.
Developers have been trying for more than three years to build on the site. Opponents from the nearby community raised concerns about the project's density and water availability.
The county has resisted plans to provide developers with water. Then this week, County Manager Roman Abeyta proposed the negotiations.
Homeowners group president Carl Dickens says he was stunned at the surprise development and hopeful that the county will buy the land.
A lawyer for developer Jim Borrego says a sale is possible but far from certain and the homes may still be built.
City Council Considering Items for October Ballot
Albuquerque city councilors on Monday are scheduled to consider placing a host of items on the Oct. 6 ballot.
They will consider several proposed amendments to the City Charter. They include making the city clerk and city attorney more independent of the mayoral administration; setting up a salary commission to make it easier for elected officials to get pay raises; and establishing a conference committee to resolve disputes between the mayor and council.
Also on the agenda is a measure that would ask voters to renew a sales tax that supports transportation initiatives.
Councilors might also vote to prohibit drivers from revving their engines Downtown.
The meeting is at 5 p.m. in the city-county Government Center, One Civic Plaza NW.
City Makes Agreement With UNM, Sandia Labs
Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez has announced a new research agreement involving the University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories and the city of Albuquerque.
Initially, the effort will involve using UNM and Sandia's brain power to help solve "real-world problems in the city of Albuquerque," the mayor said on Friday. "It's really exciting."
He said he expects the agreement to become a model for other communities around the country.
