Pair Finds Decomposed Body
The decomposed body of a woman was discovered Friday afternoon in rural Valencia County.
Sheriff Rene Rivera said a couple was searching for aluminum cans on the mesa east of El Cerro Mission when they discovered a hand and foot sticking out from underneath a discarded mattress.
"It appears to be a woman," Rivera said of the remains. "At this point, we're treating this as a homicide."
Rivera said the body was badly decomposed and estimates, by the condition of the remains, that it may have been in the area for about a year.
He said women's clothing was on the body as well as several rings.
El Pueblo Road Fixes Planned
Safety improvements will be made to El Pueblo Road near the Rail Runner Express' Los Ranchos/Journal Center station, according to the Mid-Region Council of Governments.
"We've got a lot of people using this particular station, so we are adding some interim safety features as we explore a long-term solution," Lawrence Rael, executive director of MRCOG, said in a statement.
Among the improvements: three speed humps will be placed on El Pueblo between Edith and Second Street; signs warning drivers that they are entering a congested area will be posted; the speed limit will be reduced from 40 to 30 mph; and there will be an increase in patrols by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
Work is scheduled to start Sunday.
Center Could Be Renamed
The South Valley Economic Development Center would be renamed to honor former County Commissioner Steve Gallegos under a proposal headed to the commission next week.
Commissioner Art De La Cruz, who took office this month, is sponsoring the measure. He said he would like to see the county name more of its parks and buildings after community leaders.
Gallegos "has been a very caring and effective elected official," De La Cruz said Friday in an interview. "I think it would be appropriate in this case."
But Julie Stephens of the Rio Grande Community Development Corp., which works with the county to run the center, said she prefers to keep the existing name. It was developed through a community process with an advisory board, she said.
And Stephens said that former Commissioners Orlando Vigil and Teresa Córdova supported the center, too.
City To Discuss Spending Cuts
Albuquerque councilors will discuss the city's dwindling revenue on Monday in a committee meeting.
They will hear a report from the mayoral administration on its work to reduce spending this year.
Also on the agenda is a proposal by Councilor Michael Cadigan to slash spending on social-service contracts, travel and other costs.
The finance committee meets at 5 p.m. in the Vince Griego chambers at City Hall, One Civic Plaza NW.
