Navajo Tribal Council Rejects Term Limits

Associated Press
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The Navajo Nation Tribal Council has rejected a referendum that would have imposed term limits for delegates and the speaker of the council.
On Tuesday, the council voted 56-16 against the measure during the second day of its summer session.
The legislation, sponsored by Delegate Pete Ken Atcitty of Shiprock, would have limited delegates to four consecutive 4-year terms and the speaker to four consecutive 2-year terms. A delegate could take a term off and run for office after four years.
The term limit measure also failed in the council's spring session.
Also on Tuesday, Navajo lawmakers approved the $6.6 million purchase of the Inn of Gallup on the city's west side.
With the development of the first Navajo casino just east of Gallup, some delegates said the hotel could have good potential to bring traffic to the casino via a hotel shuttle service. The Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise will operate the 212-room hotel and its convention facilities.
