Holloman Squadron To Be Deactivated
One of Holloman Air Force Base's two squadrons that fly the new F-22 Raptor will be deactivated July 15, a first step toward replacing the squadrons' fifth-generation fighters with older F-16 Fighting Falcons.
The 8th Fighter Squadron, known as the Black Sheep squadron, held a deactivation ceremony May 13. Some of the squadron's F-22s will go temporarily to its sister unit, the 7th Fighter Squadron, also based at Holloman, before being moved to Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
The rest of the 8th's F-22s will go to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska; Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.; and Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
Holloman, the former home of the now-retired F-117A Night Hawk stealth fighter, is scheduled to receive two F-16 training squadrons to replace the F-22 squadrons.
Illegal Purchases Of Guns Nets 2 Years
LAS CRUCES — A Roswell man has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in the unlawful purchase of several assault rifles and semiautomatic pistols from licensed dealers.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 38-year-old Carlos Martell was sentenced Wednesday afternoon in Las Cruces. He must also serve three years of supervised release.
Martell admitted paying two individuals to purchase firearms for him so that he wouldn't be linked to the guns. Prosecutors say he knew the straw purchasers falsely stated that they were the actual purchasers of the firearms.
Martell said that he knew some of guns would be sent to Mexico and that he transferred at least two of them to individuals who could not legally possess firearms or who intended to use the firearms unlawfully.
Bernalillo Schools Chief on Paid Leave
Bernalillo Public Schools placed Superintendent Ralph Friedly on paid leave Monday, although the reason for the school board action remains unclear.
The vote was 4-1 in a special meeting Monday, with member Nancy Walker voting against the measure, according to Vice President Vincent Montoya. He said Allan Tapia, the district's executive director of secondary education, will take over the superintendent duties in the interim.
Montoya said that, because this is a personnel issue, he cannot comment on the reasons behind the decision. Montoya said board President Olivia Calabaza was responsible for speaking on behalf of the board.
However, Calabaza was tight-lipped about the decision. Although the action was taken in a public meeting, Calabaza refused to divulge basic details about the decision, including when it happened, who was taking over his duties and who voted against the measure.
