A Way to Keep Speeches Short
Journal Staff Report
A sticky-fingered heister made off with a city of Albuquerque lectern minutes before a recent news conference outside the Frontier Restaurant.
Saturday, before Mayor Martin Chávez announced a state proposal covering bus fares for University of New Mexico students, an audacious passerby snatched the lecturn, walked away and packed it into a pickup truck.
The larceny happened before a growing crowd of local news reporters. None knew they had witnessed a crime.
Officials haven't announced a reward or any leads in the case.
A transit spokesman called the theft "kind of amusing" but said officials want the lectern returned.
