La Mesa Man Sentenced to 54 Years in Prison

Associated Press
LAS CRUCES — A state district judge has sentenced a 29-year-old La Mesa man to 54 years in prison after he was convicted of raping two young girls.
Manuel Guerra III could have been sentenced to more than 550 years after his April convictions on 32 counts of first-degree criminal sexual penetration.
Guerra was accused of sexually abusing the children between 2002 and 2005, beginning when they were about 4 years old.
Prosecutor Heather Chavez says Monday's sentence means Guerra must serve at least 85 percent of his term, so he will not be eligible for parole until he has served 46 years.
He also must register as a sex offender.
