Albuquerque Elementary School Goes Green
Associated Press
Barcelona Elementary School is going green with its new classroom building.
Officials with the Albuquerque public school district plan to show off the $3.1 million building during a special event Thursday. It includes eight new classrooms, a fine arts room, insulation made of recycled blue jeans and a reflective roof that will save on cooling costs.
The building also has sensor-controlled lights and special planters that are designed to make plants more self-sufficient.
The building is aiming for gold certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. If awarded the certification, it would be the first for a school in New Mexico.
Barcelona principal Rose White says the building will also act as a teaching tool for the school's 600 students.
