Japanese Man Accused of Attacking Lecturer Is Arraigned

    SANTA FE — Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference'' during an international conference in Santa Fe.
    State District Judge Michael Vigil on Friday set the bond for 33-year-old Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama, who has been held in the Santa Fe County jail.
    Hirano is charged with attempted aggravated battery with a knife or, alternatively, attempted murder.
    Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist known for his theories on mental telepathy, was stabbed in the left thigh April 2 during the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness at a Santa Fe hotel.
    Sheldrake says Hirano had told him the day before that he heard voices and thought people were trying to communicate with him telepathically.
