N.M. Launches Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign

Associated Press
SANTA FE — The state Health Department has launched an awareness campaign to encourage women to ask their doctors about getting a Pap smear and mammogram to screen for breast and cervical cancer.
The Health Department contracts with clinics around New Mexico to provide annual Pap smears and mammograms for New Mexico women who are uninsured or underinsured and live below the federal poverty level.
The program served almost 12,000 women last year and 13,000 the year before.
The decline is a concern for Health Secretary Dr. Alfredo Vigil, who said health officials want to see women screened because breast or cervical cancer treatments work best when the illness is diagnosed at an early stage.
