Coal Train Topples From Tracks in Belen

Associated Press
BELEN — No one was injured when a freight train carrying coal derailed in Belen, but the accident blocked a major route from the city, tore up railroad track and scattered coal.
Seven open-top cars of the coal train jumped the tracks in the BNSF Railway yard shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Traffic had to be detoured around the spilled coal, and trains on the route were delayed.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The state's commuter train, the Rail Runner Express, stops at the north end of the Belen freight yard and was not affected.
