Feds Deny Protection to Caddisfly in New Mexico, Colorado

DENVER — Federal officials have rejected a petition seeking protection for a small moth-like insect found known to exist in only three sites: two in Colorado and one in New Mexico.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said based on its review, it doesn't believe the Susan's purse-making caddisfly is in danger of going extinct. The agency said Monday that the insect doesn't warrant protection under the Endangered species Act.
Conservation groups sought protection for the caddisfly, found only at a spring in Chaffee County and a creek in Park County in Colorado and at Jaramillo Creek in Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico.
The groups said the caddisfly is endangered by livestock grazing, logging, development and depleted springs.
